This page is designed to guide you through the process from first contact to starting a project at FragMAX. If anything is unclear, or if you are unsure whether your project is suitable, please do not hesitate to get in touch – we are always happy to discuss ideas at an early stage.

Industrial users

Please contact the MAX IV Industrial Relations Office. They will arrange a meeting with the FragMAX team to discuss:

  • Technical details about the FragMAX workflow
  • Technical feasibility of the planned project
  • Experimental design and timelines
  • Administrative and financial aspects

Together, we will define the most suitable project setup and move your project forward as efficiently as possible.

Academic users

Academic users apply to FragMAX through DUO. We strongly recommend contacting us before applying. We will guide you how best to apply for access at FragMAX.

There are two main routes:

Standard Access

Calls typically open twice per year (usually February and September).

Fast Access

Available year-round, with three options:

  • Scientific Experiment (SE)
  • Sample Feasibility (SF)
  • Standard Measurement Service (SMS)

We will advise you which route is most appropriate during the initial discussion.

Submitting your application Applications are submitted via the MAX IV DUO system. There is currently no dedicated FragMAX proposal type, so please apply as follows:

  • Proposal type: Normal (or Fast Access)
  • Research area: Structural Biology
  • Beamline: BioMAX
  • Title/Abstract: Please mention FragMAX clearly

If applying for Fast Access, please specify whether your application is SE, SF or SMS.

Important note on eligibility: If you have previously held BioMAX or FragMAX proposals, please ensure that all required reports have been submitted. Outstanding reports may prevent new applications from being accepted.
