At FragMAX, we are not only a scientific service platform but also an active research group working to improve multiple aspects of crystallographic fragment screening. Our research focuses on understanding and controlling the factors that influence fragment binding in crystals, with the aim of delivering more reliable, interpretable and biologically meaningful results for our users. To support these efforts, we collaborate with Jens Carlsson’s research group at Uppsala University and the Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden (CBCS) on the identification of starting points for novel antivirals targeting Dengue virus proteins.
PhD projects
FragMAX is part of the MAX IV PRISMAS PhD programme and currently hosts two doctoral projects:
- Julian Ludäscher (Pål Stenmark group, Stockholm University) uses crystallographic fragment screening at FragMAX to develop novel starting points for cancer therapeutics.
- Philip Ullmann (Jens Carlsson group, Uppsala University) develops computational methods to navigate large chemical spaces and accelerate fragment elaboration based on crystallographic data.
Master students

Visiting scientists
We also host visiting scientists at FragMAX for research stays of up to six months. Please note that visitors are expected to secure their own funding to cover living costs and any non-standard consumables required for their projects.
