Co-crystallisation is a great method for obtaining protein-ligand structures, but it is generally not practical for large-scale fragment screening. High fragment concentrations often interfere with crystallisation, while low concentrations reduce sensitivity. In addition, crystallisation frequency can be limiting. Soaking is currently the most robust and scalable approach.
Unfortunately not. Fragment screening at FragMAX is an integrated workflow that is best carried out on site using our automation, data handling and beamline integration.

The short answer is “No”. FragMAX staff can carry out the experiment for you. You are very welcome to visit if you wish, but it is not required for standard screening campaigns.

No, we do not provide medicinal or computational chemistry workflows. However, we are happy to suggest relevant infrastructures, such as Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden (CBCS) or EU-OPENSCREEN.
Once protein and reagents arrive, crystallisation is set up shortly afterwards. Screening usually starts one to two weeks after suitable crystals appear. A standard FragMAXlib campaign is often completed within about a month, depending on crystal behaviour and demand.
Not at all. We can use solvent-free protocols and have successfully screened many DMSO-sensitive systems. We recommend testing solvent tolerance in advance and are happy to advise.
Yes – and in many cases this is highly recommended. Different crystal forms can show different binding behaviour of fragments and may result in overall higher hit rates.
FragMAX is open to academic and industrial users worldwide. We welcome projects from Sweden and from the international community.
