The Scandinavian Crystallography Service (SCS) is a single crystal X-ray diffraction service for chemical crystallography and materials science.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction is the preferred technique to solve the atomic structure of a crystalline material. Today, it is a routine technique in many research laboratories, however, the limited flux, spectral purity and focusing ability of a lab-source severely limits the size and quality of the crystals that can be measured. Moreover, many materials do not grow crystals that are large enough to be studied by this technique. Synchrotrons can close this gap; however, they are not commonly used for routine small molecule crystallography due to the required additional technical expertise and long lead times in the proposal-based access policy.

The Scandinavian Crystallography Service (SCS) seeks to remove this barrier and establish a point-of-entry for service crystallography. It covers fundamental materials research as well as deep strategic studies of commercial interest and provides new synergies, scientific projects and structural insights using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The target demographic is any commercial or academic user, independent of the level of crystallographic experience.

How to contact SCS?

Academic and industrial users can access SCS anytime by contacting us at scs@maxiv.lu.se

Showing SCS is based in Scandinavia and uses beamlines SINCRYS, MicroMAX and BioMAX at MAX IV.

What expertise does SCS provide?

The service is unique in that it will be based on MAX IV with direct access to beamlines SINCRYS, BioMAX and MicroMAX. This allows for fast data collections on a wide range of compounds with smaller unit cells that can benefit to be measured with higher intensity. Depending on user experience with X-ray single crystal diffraction there are different access levels such as ‘Data Only’, and ‘Full Structure analysis’. Although we have a standard workflow, we are flexible and open to accommodating non-standard requests.

What we offer?

The Scandinavian Crystallography Service (SCS) focus on the technique of single crystal X-ray diffraction applied to samples submitted by either industry or research groups. SCS support users throughout Scandinavia and further abroad. We offer to mount single crystals of your sample, test some crystals. If successful continue to solve data from collected data. Depending on data quality and model quality the best data are chosen.

Access modes are: Frames only, Data only (ins-, hkl- and instrument cif-file) or Full Structure analysis (publishable cif-file).

Temperature range: 90 to 500 K (Standard temperature is 100 K)

Wavelength range: 2.4 Å to 0.5 Å (5 to 25 keV) depending on beamline used and achievable resolution of data.
