Fast Access (also known as “Rapid Access”) is intended for projects that require quick access to beamtime at MAX IV, such as testing a sample before submitting a Standard Access proposal. There are currently three Fast Access use cases that are offered at MAX IV and all are handled on a “first come first serve” basis:
- Scientific Experiment (SE)
Short, time-critical experiments which cannot wait until the next call for proposals.
- Sample Feasibility (SF)
Preliminary experiments conducted to evaluate technical feasibility or validate sample preparation, primarily serving as a preliminary study for a Standard Access proposal.
- Standard Measurement Service (SMS)
A set of similar samples with a scope too small for a Standard Access proposal.
We aim to provide a prompt decision upon proposal submission. However, response times may vary due to factors such as workload, national holidays and machine shutdown periods.
Note: Due to the specific conditions that each beamline can offer in Fast Access, we strongly recommend that you contact the beamline staff before submitting your proposal, please take a look at the participating beamlines in the table below.
Participating Beamlines
In the table below you can see if the beamline is currently accepting proposals, and the maximum shifts that can be requested per proposal, please note these may differ depending on the type of fast access you are applying for. Please visit the individual beamline pages to find more about Fast Access at the specific beamline.
It is strongly recommended to contact the beamline of interest for further discussions before submitting your proposal.

- We strongly encourage that you contact the beamline staff before submitting your proposal. To submit a proposal for Fast access you should do this in our DUO system, please see our Proposal Submission Guide.
- We run a rolling call for Fast Access, so you can apply at any time.
Fast Access is for smaller projects that require timely access to beamtime, that cannot wait until the next open call. We aim for proposals to be scheduled within 12 weeks of submission.
- Users are required to submit an Experimental Report no later than three months after the experiment, in accordance with MAX IV Terms & Conditions. If an experimental report is missing at the time of submission of a new Fast Access proposal, this will result in immediate rejection of proposal.
- There is a limit to the number of shifts that can be granted to a Fast Access proposal, please see our Fast Access Overview for more information.
- Users are granted beamtime through open access in accordance with MAX IV Terms & Conditions.
- No charge for beamtime.
- Users pay for consumables exceeding a predefined amount.
Please see the User Policies Page.
The evaluation process for a Fast Access proposal depends on the type of proposal this is.
- Scientific Experiments: These proposals will be sent to our PAC to be peer reviewed, this review is based on scientific merit.
- Sample Feasibility: The proposals will be evaluated by the beamline coordinator on their technical feasibility.
- Standard Measurement Server: The proposals will be evaluated by the beamline coordinator on their technical feasibility.
- Anyone wanting to be on the proposal should create a DUO account. If you are unsure if you have an account or need to update your details, please contact useroffice@maxiv.lu.se.
- It is strongly encouraged that you contact the beamline staff before submitting your proposal.
- Submit your proposal in DUO.
- Use the correct proposal template, do not exceed the page limitations and remember to clearly justify the need for Fast Access : Download Fast Access template.
Users are required to submit an Experimental Report no later than three months after an experiment, in accordance with MAX IV Terms & Conditions. If an experimental report is missing at the time of submission of a new proposal there are strict penalties in place. To read more see our User Policies Page & Proposal Submission Guide.
