New report: MAX IV and Industry 2024

Max iv and industry2024

MAX IV releases its third annual report about industrial use of the facility.

2024 marked another successful year of industrial research at MAX IV, with users spanning fields ranging from semiconducter fabrication to disease pathologies. Industrial use of the facility continues to grow, with more than 1,000 hours of proprietary beamtime delivered last year.

12% of MAX IV users in 2024 had industry connections. These users accessed MAX IV through proprietary access (3%) or through the open access route with academic or institute partners (9%).

New services and techniques developed with industrial input

AutoMAX, which underwent trial runs in 2024, is an automated and unattended x-ray crystallography service developed at the BioMAX beamline in response to user requests. Users submit their crystals and diffraction plans by mail, and data collection takes place within one week. BioMAX also offers remote access and the FragMAX crystal-based fragment and compound screening platform. The beamline remains in high demand by industrial users.

At the NanoMAX beamline, a partnership with Truly Labs, funded by Vinnova, is exploring new ways to study lung disease using X-ray fluorescence. In addition to innovations at the beamline, the project also includes the development of a user interface which will enable streamlined data analysis and visualisation.

The team at the Industrial Relations Office continues to work toward strong and sustained industry presence at the facility by 2030.
