Warm welcome to Dr. Jonathan West from University of Southampton, UK, as our next speaker in the MAX4Life Talk Series for Spring 2026!
The MAX4Life series highlights innovative and impactful Life Science research through one-hour talks, followed by Q&A and informal mingling with the MAX IV community.
Talk Title: “Microfluidics for Resolving Protein Dynamics“
Dr. West will be discussing microfluidic strategies for precise millisecond control in time-resolved experiments. His talk will highlight challenges and innovations enabling uniform reactions across diverse applications, from serial crystallography to HDX-MS and membrane protein dynamics.
Time & Date: 14:00 to 15:00 on Wednesday, June 10
Location: meeting room MAX II, MAX IV Laboratory
External participants who wish to attend physically can register via the Indico link. Please use the Zoom link if attending remotely.
Dr. West will be at MAX IV for the full day on June 10, we encourage interested researchers to engage with him during his visit.
Abstract:
Time-resolved experiments require the addition of substrates and ligands at millisecond timescales to be consistent with reaction timescales. In parallel, uniform incubations are required to resolve different states and overall dynamics. In my talk I will explore microfluidic phenomena which pose challenges and opportunities for achieving precision time control. I will discuss different microfluidic approaches using examples from the field and my Biomedical Microfluidics lab, with applications spanning time-resolved serial crystallography, hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) and the investigation of protein dynamics within cell membranes.
