Mirjam Lindberg, a long-time valued member of MAX IV's Technical Division and previously the group manager of the Software Group, stepped up as Interim Technical Director starting 1 January 2026. She fills the position previously held by Anna-Hultin Stigenberg, who retired on 1 January 2026.
Mirjam joined MAX IV in 2010 as a research engineer. She worked on developing control systems, interfacing hardware, embedded and middleware programming, and process improvements within the group. She then became team lead for the Control Software team that worked with software development and control system support. Most recently, she was the group manager of MAX IV’s Software Group.
“The technical division is a crucial part of the smooth running of MAX IV’s complex machinery. We have complex systems and experts who mostly work behind the scenes, and I’m looking forward to learning more about the different areas we should lift up,” said Mirjam.
Since taking on the assignment, Mirjam’s focus has been on MAX IV’s data management and strategy, aligned with users’ needs and stakeholders strategic reviews. Since the push for data strategy and management is widespread across other facilities as well, Mirjam plans to engage other facilities in discussions about a future-proof data management solution.
In her time as team lead on the Control Software team, Mirjam championed collaboration engagements in her leadership. She was involved in several collaborative projects with other European research infrastructures, including ESRF, ALBA, Solaris, and DESY. She also involved in MAX IV’s engagement within LEAPS (League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources), the network of Synchrotron Radiation and Free-Electron Laser user facilities in Europe. During her term, the Control Software team is involved, among others, in the Open Data framework being developed with ESS and other LEAPS facilities.
“With the mandate as interim technical director, I am looking for long-term solutions. The AI strategy that I was working on is also part of the framework. Data management and strategy are crucial for the optimal operation of the facility and for the sustainability of work in the technical division and beyond. Workplace environment and sustainability across the technical division are a vital part of ensuring the facility operates well,” said Mirjam.
Congratulations, Mirjam!
