Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS) is a €140 million EU program which strengthens regional cooperation to tackle shared challenges. Its support enables cross-border collaboration, ensuring that state-of-the-art facilities like MAX IV are fully utilised, maximising their potential for medical and biotechnological advancements.

HALRIC project

Halric logo

The HALRIC project is an EU-Interreg ÖKS supported initiative to increase the utilisation of the strong and unique life science research infrastructures and competences present in Northern Europe – more precisely Denmark, Southern Sweden, the Hamburg region, and the Oslo region. The primary aim of the initiative is to increase the engagement of companies and hospitals in research collaborations with the large-scale infrastructures (MAX IV, ESS, EuXFEL and DESY) and with smaller-scale infrastructures, through supporting up to 75 collaborative pilot projects.

For MAX IV the support from the HALRIC project is critical as it aligns with our ambition to increase the use of the infrastructure by scientists from the Life Science sector. Especially towards medical sciences and researchers from hospitals. Marjolein Thunnissen is the MAX IV representative regarding this initiative.

HALRIC is a three-year program set to end in March 2026 – a cross-border initiative linking Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Germany fostering innovation in life sciences by leveraging world-class research infrastructures like MAX IV and ESS. With Interreg ÖKS’s financial support, HALRIC is driving 75 collaborative research projects, uniting industry, hospitals, and universities to unlock new scientific breakthroughs.

By bridging expertise across regions, HALRIC with support from the Interreg ÖKS programme, not only powers research—they are transforming the ÖKS-Hamburg area into a global hub for life sciences, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries that benefit both Europe and the world.
