VR grants additional funds for operation of MAX IV

MAX IV in autumn

The Swedish Research Council (VR) announced today that it is granting an additional grant of 320 million SEK for the operation of MAX IV for the years 2025-2026.

“This is very welcome news that enables us to focus on operations and the future state of the organization,” commented MAX IV’s Director Olof ‘Charlie’ Karis. “We will of course also continue the work of securing MAX IV’s long-term financing.”

The money is granted with two specific conditions:

  • The implementation of a survey of Excellence Cluster groups in Sweden that may use MAX IV in their operations in the future, and their needs. The report will also analyze how MAX IV can meet these needs and provide concrete suggestions on how the Swedish use of MAX IV can be improved. This must be reported back by 31 March 2026.
  • Lund University must also submit a plan for how the work with the co-financing requirement mentioned in the budget bill for 2026 (government bill 2025/26:1) will be carried out. The plan must be submitted no later than 30 January 2026.
