Conceptual design for three potential new beamlines developed with WISE

After successfully bringing the first 16 funded beamlines into operation, we now look into the future. In collaboration with the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE), funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and together with the scientific community, MAX IV will develop the conceptual designs for three potential new materials science beamlines.

Matrix of existing capabilities for sustainability

The WISE materials science initiative with six university partners is funded with 3 billion Swedish kronor over 12 years from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and started as a way for Sweden to contribute to a sustainable future and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

WISE has defined a matrix of research areas of importance to materials science for sustainability. The “MAX IV and WISE – Summary of Existing Capabilities” report was released in April 2023, summarising how the available possibilities at MAX IV fit the matrix.

Developing three new beamline concepts as a complement

To complement the existing capabilities, a suggestion has been made for three new beamlines. The new beamlines would focus on spectroscopy with hard and tender X-rays (supporting techniques such as HAXPES), diffraction with operando surface and powder X-ray diffraction at high frame rates, and full-field X-ray imaging and tomography with absorption and phase contrast, respectively.

The conceptual design for the beamlines is being developed and defined together with the scientific community at workshops targeted towards the respective beamlines. Each conceptual design is finished with a report that will be sent to WISE by the end of 2023.

First workshop was held in Uppsala

The first workshop, A New Spectroscopy Beamline for Materials Science, was held at Uppsala University and online via ZOOM on 8 November. It included several talks on catalysis, buried interfaces, battery research, corrosion, and solar cell materials. There were also discussions on the science case and technical solutions for the potential new beamline. The workshops for the additional two beamlines will occur at the end of November.
