Proposal types and research areas

Users are strongly encouraged to discuss their proposal with the beamline staff before submission. See available techniques page for details.

General user calls

Proposals are submitted through the MAX IV DUO system. Choose “research area” in DUO as indicated below.

Proposal types:

  • Normal is the standard proposal type and available for all beamlines (proposal template). Normal proposals are valid for one beamtime cycle (6 months).
  • BAG proposals are available in the research area “Structural Biology” for experiments at the BioMAX beamline (proposal template). Accepted BAG proposals are valid for four beamtime cycles (two years). Please read the proposal and reporting instructions.
  • Longterm is a special proposal type in DUO for projects that require guaranteed access to beamtime for longer than one beamtime cycle (6 months). MAX IV accepts proposals of type “Longterm” only for specific beamlines and in the framework of a specific program. Please refer to the overview of Longterm calls and programs.

“Research Area” to be selected in DUO:

  • Structural Biology for beamtime at the BioMAX beamline.
  • Spectroscopy for beamtime at the Bloch, FinEstBeAMS, FlexPES, HIPPIE, MAXPEEM, SPECIES and Veritas beamlines. It is possible to submit APXPS proposals to HIPPIE and SPECIES at the same time (‘Ctrl’+Click when choosing beamline in DUO), if they don’t need beamline specific capabilities.
  • Nano science for beamtime at the NanoMAX beamline.
  • Chemistry for beamtime at the Balder beamline.

Commissioning expert calls

Scientific experiments that will help in the commissioning of beamlines at MAX IV can be proposed in response to commissioning expert calls. Please observe the specific instructions for commissioning expert calls. Commissioning experiments are available for specific beamlines and specific instrumentation / methods only. See available techniques page for details.

Proposal types:

  • Normal is the only proposal type available for commissioning expert calls, using a special template (proposal template).

“Research Area” to be selected in DUO:

  • Commissioning for commissioning experiments at all beamlines.

New access modes: rapid access and feasibility studies

During September, MAX IV will start offering new access modes to the community through proposal submission in DUO: Rapid access is for projects that need access to BioMAX and MAXPEEM on short notice, including through remote access or mail-in (for MAXPEEM). Feasibility studies will be offered on most beamlines and are targeted for users without prior synchrotron experience and/or types of samples where no literature reference to synchrotron measurement exists. Both access modes are subject to independent scientific review, more information to come after summer.
