The MAX IV board has at its meeting 15 May unanimously approved the nomination of Marjolein Thunnissen as new Life Science Director at MAX IV. Marjolein will start her new assignment 1 July when Tomas Lundqvist leaves MAX IV for his new appointment as a coordinator at RISE.
Marjolein is an expert in structural biology using synchrotron radiation and her first use of synchrotrons dates back to the late 1980s. Following a PhD at Groningen University (NL) she was a postdoc in Glasgow (UK), Groningen and at Stockholm University, before coming to Lund in 2001. From 2001 – 2015 she held a position as University Lecturer at Lund University, coordinating the I911 beamline at MAX II. In parallel, she managed a research group at the Department of Biochemistry and Structural Biology. Since 2016 she has been leading the MAX IV Users Office.
In her career she has been a user, has built a beamline and operated it for users, and she has the experience of organising user operation across many beamlines. Marjolein also has a broad national and international network. She has been asked to work as a reviewer at EMBL (DE), Photon Factory (JP), ESRF (FR) and SPring-8 (JP). She is working within EU-funded projects like BioStructX, iNEXT, Calipso+ and Interreg ÖKS. On top of this she knows the Swedish universities, which are co-funding MAX IV beamlines and operations.
Having worked at MAX-lab and MAX IV for many years she knows the present challenges and opportunities very well. She will be a major contribution in bringing as many beamlines at MAX IV into high quality user operation as soon as possible. Through her network and based on her own experience she will also contribute to shaping the vision for MAX IV for the next decade.
