It’s not just about the light

We talk a lot about light at MAX IV and we are very proud of the quality and brightness of the X-rays coming from our accelerator every day. However, the light on its own is not enough. Scientists coming to use MAX IV have lots different requirements when it comes to how their precious

MAX IV Biolab is officially open

The biological laboratory at MAX IV is the central laboratory facility to support life science related experiments at various beamlines and also a platform to carry out in-house life science research. The lab complements those beamline-attached sample preparation units and is designed to offer extended instrumentation access and top-notch supports with continuous upgrading possibility.

9 Beamlines simultaneously receiving light at MAX IV

Photo by Steve Molloy, Head of Operations at MAX IV.   Something monumental happened at MAX IV this week. For the first time in our history, The three accelerators at MAX IV simultaneously supplied light to 9 beamlines. Some of these beamlines are in commissioning and not accepting regular users yet. For up-to-date information on

Knowledge exchange between MAX IV and SESAME is now underway

Image: The SESAME Synchrotron in Jordan The Swedish Institute is funding scholarships for training for researchers related to the SESAME synchrotron in Jordan to come to MAX IV for 3 – 6 months. The first researcher to be awarded a grant is now in Lund and well underway with her training. Saima Rasheed is an

Biological material discovered in Jurassic fossil

MAX IV’s Anders Engdahl was part of a team that published a landmark study about biological tissue found in a Jurassic fossil. The work published this week in Nature is one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind and sheds new light on the life of a prehistoric sea creature.   Ichthyosaurs were reptiles

Better catalysts for making biofuel

Sara Blomberg is a postdoc at Department of Chemical Engineering, Lund University. Her research project “In situ activation study of NiMo catalyst tailored for biofuel production” focuses on characterisation of catalysts used in the hydrogenation processes of depolymerisation of lignin. What this translates to in layperson language is “trying to understanding how a catalyst cuts

Sample changer for BioMAX in successful user operation

The macromolecular crystallography beamline BioMAX have for the first time been running their sample changer on a regular basis. The robot has been changing 320 samples for four user groups within its first two weeks of operation. At a macromolecular crystallography beamline, the samples are biological molecules. One example is the proteins which are the

Graphene takes a step towards renewable fuel

Researchers from Linköping performed experiments at the Max-Lab beamline I311. They recently published two papers, one in the journal Carbon and one in Nano Letters. This work will be conducted at the MAXPEEM beamline in the future which is expecting the first expert users in the first quarter of 2019. Here is the news release from

The quest for better medical imaging at MAX IV

Advances in the world of physics often quickly lead to advances in the world of medical diagnostics. From the moment Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays he was using them to look through his wife’s hand. A lot of the physics principles at the foundation of MAX IV are also at the foundation of medical imaging technologies

SSF funding awarded to Kajsa Sigfridsson Clauss

The Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, awarded over SEK 236 million to 33 different projects to promote the development of instruments, methods and technologies that provide the prerequisites for future, advanced research and innovation. One of the researchers who was granted funding is Kajsa Sigfridsson Clauss who is a scientist at the Balder beamline at
